More than 500 teachers and students were evacuated from a university in Australia after the smell of rotten durian was mistaken for a gas leak.

Melbourne’s Metropolitan Fire Brigade were mobilised to carry out a “comprehensive search” of the building. But nothing except an extremely smelly fruit was found.

Durians are known as the king of tropical fruit in South East Asia with a sweet and creamy flesh, but their smell has been compared to everything from onions to sewage by many.

They have since given the university the all clear and the building has now been reopened.
