Thief Preys on Elderly Women by Drugging Them
As parents always warn their children about talking to strangers, the elderly is not safe from this either. A new method of stealing has been observed in Singapore, as a repeat offender, Oh Koon Shin, was caught for robbing elderly women. Oh Koon Shin, 59, has been found guilty for multiple charges of theft. His common method is targeting on women who are visiting the polyclinic.
On 6 Sep 2019, a 73-year-old victim was waiting for her turn at Queenstown Polyclinic as she complains about her neck pain. Koon Shin overheard the conversation and approached her with zopiclone, a short-term hypnotic treatment for insomnia. He said that the drug would ease her neck pain and managed to get the woman to consume it. As she became light-headed, Koon Shin brought her out of the clinic and stole her necklace worth $6,000, $400 in cash, two gold rings, her POSB ATM card, a Visa card and along with other belongings. He then called a passer-by to call for an ambulance for the woman.
After that incident, he used the same method, at the same polyclinic, on a 71-year-old female who owns a hawker stall. Through that, he managed to get a gold-coloured bracelet and $2,500.
With this new method of approaching elderly victims, who are not in the best health conditions, everyone should keep a lookout and be more careful of who they talk to.
